Measure for measure

instructions to soak and cook dried peas
Batchelors® quick soak dried peas.

According to the instructions, 850 mL is equivalent to 1½ pints, and 425 mL is approximately ¾ pint.

Wait a minute, 425 is exactly half of 850, and ¾ is exactly half of 1½. So, why (approx. 3/4 pint)? Perhaps it means that if you're using metric, you have to be precise; but if you can't be arsed, just work with imperial measurements.

That's old skool for you. Close enough is good enough! (thumbup)

We have two sets of measuring spoons in the kitchen. I have no idea why we need two, but I don't buy this shit. Anyhow, both have a tablespoon with its metric equivalent volume stamped on the handle. One is 15 mL (metric), the other is 20 mL (Australia). (SMH)

Note to self: Just add enough water to not quite cover the peas for cooking. Simmer gently, stirring occasionally, and top up with boiling water as necessary. Add salt and a little malt vinegar.

If you follow the instructions, you end up with a watery gloop that takes bloody ages to reduce to a thick, puree consistency. And makes a hell of a mess while doing so. (mad)
