What's that smell?

The Grammys have been and gone without controversy, besides Jay-Z bitchin' that his wife's not received the recognition he thinks she deserves. Poor lamb, hopefully the royalties will offer some comfort.

Really, it wouldn't be of note, except reading of it drew a Peter Jacksonism to my attention. Miley Cyrus won the award for record of the year for Flowers, while song of the year went to Billie Eilish for What Was I Made For? But this seems to be a case of taking one award and splitting it into two, rather like taking a novel slim enough for even me to have read as a boy, and turning it into three films.*

What the hell is the difference between a song and a record, at least in awards terms? Yes, a record is a single release, whether or not it's pressed to 7" or 12" vinyl, while song might more broadly apply to album tracks, for example. Either way, each refers to only one song title. Eilish's may have been released as part of an OST rather than a stand-alone single, but with the prevalence of streaming that's a mere bagatelle.

It just seems like two baubles for the price of one. Not that it bothers me too much, I like both of them.

* I'm referring to The Hobbit, not Lord of the Rings. I've never come across a table wonky enough to need that to level it up.
