Well, duh! It had an ice axe embedded in it. Innit?
Under similar circumstances, even my brain would prove unusually heavy. And that's saying something!
The mountaineering tool shown in the BBC's photograph is an ice axe, it's not also known as an ice pick. The pointed or toothed part of the head is called the pick, but an ice pick is an altogether different implement which is used to break ice. Hence this post is tagged accordingly, as is this footnote.
