Pope goes the weasel
28 May 2024

Old men are wont to say what they really think when it's least appropriate, and Pope Francis is no exception. During a closed door meeting with bishops, the aged god-botherer rejected the proposal that homosexuals should be eligible for the priesthood, going so far as to say that there was already too much of an air of frociaggine in the Catholic Church.

Religiously passing the buck
29 October 2023

The Spanish Catholic Church is believed to be responsible for the sexual abuse of hundreds of thousands of children. Spain's ombudsman, Angel Gabilondo, also criticised the Church for inaction; attempts to cover up or deny the abuse; and a less-than-wholehearted engagement with his commission's work:

The pumpkin slayer
20 October 2023

A Czech parish priest has taken it upon himself to turn the tide of heathen satanic worship, by smashing carved pumpkin lanterns in the village. Twice.

Porky 🐷
21 September 2023

A Muslim woman has been sentenced to two years' jail time by an Indonesian court for eating pork after offering a brief Islamic prayer—Bismillah—and then posting the video to TikTok. On the spectrum of all that's stupid, that has gotta lie more towards the really-not-a-good-idea end. I'd've thought that, as a Muslim, she'd be behind Islam's strict prohibition on consuming pig; or at least cognisant of Indonesia's strict blasphemy laws.

Bible bashing
3 June 2023

After the pornography of Michaelangelo's David, comes the vulgarity and violence of the King James Bible. I shit you not. A parent in Utah complained of its depravity, and the school district has removed it from elementary and middle schools.

Keeping their religion
14 May 2023

The BBC's home page teases what appears to be a story of Muslims transitioning to other faiths. Possibly ones that show greater tolerance; which hardly narrows the field really.

Sì, sì, cìtron
30 April 2023

Reading of Calabrian farmers' endeavours to protect and sustain the rare citron (Citrus medica) this morning, I was struck by an overpowering sense of déjà vu. For I'd recently read of the lure of this same fruit, less than four months' ago. On the very same site, as it happens, albeit stuffed into a different pigeonhole. It seems that good topics know no bounds.

9 March 2023

Things haven't gone too smoothly in Afghanistan, since the Taliban came to power in August 2021. And not just for the populace, who probably wish that all these arseholes were martyred, so they could just get on with their lives.

Prancing prophet
8 January 2023

Since being fan-edited into Jenna Ortega's dance improv in s1e4 of Netflix's Addams Family spin-off, Wednesday, Lady Gaga's Bloody Mary has become a bit of a trope on social media. I guess I never paid much attention to it before now. But now I have…and the lyrics are enlightening, to say the least.

Immorality code
17 September 2022

Mahsa Amini was arrested by Iran's morality police for not wearing a hijab, in contravention of the country's strict rules on head coverings. She was beaten while inside a police van. Because it's immoral for a woman to not cover her head, but it's okey-dokey for the police to kick the crap out of her. That's not immoral; is that it? (rolleyes)

Wrong message
18 August 2022

A common written style of street vocabulary eschews the use of vowels, relying instead on phonetics to fill the gaps. Thus, N becomes ‑in‑ or ‑en‑, etc. It's so commonplace that reading acronyms phonetically becomes second nature.

Thought for the day: hedging your bets
14 February 2022

If you don't believe in a god and the afterlife, and you're wrong, you'll find out when you die. But, if you do believe, and you're wrong, how will you ever know? (thinking)

God is grate
20 December 2021

Offering GREETINGS IN JESUS NAME !!!!, Mrs Susan Wilson informs me that she suffers from breast cancer and stroke, which have denied her a child. Although I suspect that has more to do with her age. As, indeed, do her diseases. (pipe)

Fleecing the flock

In When Jesus is used to steal from his flock, Bernd Debusmann Jr discusses elder fraud, the scamming of trusting, elderly Christians by snake oil salesmen. It's a variant on affinity fraud, in which individuals are targeted, based on religious, ethnic, or professional associations.

Let the punishment fit the crime
24 September 2021

The Taliban have announced that extreme punishments, including execution and amputation, will resume in Afghanistan. Mullah Nooruddin Turabi, who has an infamously zealous history in the pursuit of justice, claimed that amputations were necessary for security.

Bombs or blacklisting
30 August 2021

As someone who doesn't read comics, even I'm aware of Frank Miller. If only through his works that made it to the silver screen: 300; Sin City, and it's sequel, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For; and The Spirit. Although the less said about the last one, the better.

In Indonesia, Mukhlis bin Muhammad of the Aceh Ulema Council helped draft strict adultery laws in compliance with Islamic Sharia law. So it was a surprise nice to read that he was caught with a married woman who's not his wife, and has been publicly flogged 28 times. Deep joy.

The will of God?
7 September 2019

An Indian couple, Mangayamma Yaramati and Sitarama Rajarao, have welcomed twin daughters following IVF treatment. This wouldn't really be worthy of comment, if were not for the fact that she is 73, and he is a sprightly 82 years young.

A Mormon moment (not really)
16 November 2012

During the 2012 US presidential election, much* was made of Mitt Romney's Mormon faith, and how it was seen as a negative trait for his candidature. But it's useful to reflect on the fact that not all Mormons are the same, and their faith doesn't dictate an identical world view.

But it appears that this might not be possible.

I (heart) religion (ish)
20 May 2004

Right, so along with man's greed for territory and mineral deposits, religion has got to be the greatest cause of war, death, and human misery. And they ring the fekkin' church bells on Sunday.
